On November 14, 2024, The Population Appeard had the privilege of covering the premiere of Apple Original Films’ Bread & Roses at the prestigious Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. This was more than just an evening of glitz and glamour—it was an event steeped in purpose, featuring heartfelt conversations about resilience, human rights, and the power of storytelling.

Attendees included producer and Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence,

her producing partner Justine Ciarrocchi, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai, and Afghan director Sahra Mani, each of whom brought their unique perspectives to the red carpet. The evening was an inspiring reminder of the impact cinema can have on raising awareness about global issues, and The Population Appeard was honored to be there to capture it all.

A Powerful Story of Resilience

As we mingled with filmmakers, activists, and esteemed guests, it became clear that Bread & Roses is more than a film—it’s a call to action. The documentary follows three Afghan women navigating the seismic changes to their lives and livelihoods after Kabul fell to the Taliban in 2021. Their fight to regain their autonomy, as told through the lens of Sahra Mani, offers a poignant and raw depiction of the human cost of political upheaval.

During our conversations with the film's creators,

Mani described her commitment to bringing the voices of Afghan women to the forefront. “This isn’t just their story,” she shared with The Population Appeard, “it’s a story of countless women around the world who are fighting for their rights. My goal was to show their courage, their spirit, and their hope.”

Meeting the Minds Behind the Film

The red carpet buzzed with the energy of the film’s star-studded creative team. Jennifer Lawrence, in her dual role as producer and advocate, expressed her deep admiration for the women whose stories are central to the film. Speaking with The Population Appeard, she said, “We wanted to do justice to their bravery. Their fight for freedom is universal, and their voices deserve to be heard far and wide.”

We also had the chance to speak with Malala Yousafzai,

whose commitment to empowering women through education and advocacy was a perfect complement to the documentary’s themes. “This film is a vital reminder of the resilience of Afghan women,” she told us. “Their courage in the face of unimaginable challenges is something the world needs to see.”

An Unforgettable Evening

The evening wasn’t just about the film—it was about fostering dialogue and building connections. As the event unfolded, guests reflected on the broader implications of the documentary. The Population Appeard documented the evening with interviews, behind-the-scenes insights, and an up-close look at the people driving this important project forward.

The Hammer Museum’s modern architecture and intimate setting provided the perfect backdrop for this powerful premiere. Between the impactful speeches and the palpable sense of camaraderie, it was clear this was a night to remember.

Why Bread & Roses Resonates Today

In covering Bread & Roses, The Population Appeard was struck by its timely relevance. The fall of Kabul in 2021 brought global attention to the plight of Afghan women, but the urgency of their stories has not diminished. The film’s title, referencing the dual need for sustenance and dignity, captures the broader feminist fight for equality—making this documentary a critical piece of storytelling for today’s audience.
