Spike Lee and Denzel Washington Reunite
A Long-Awaited Reunion
"That's the question I have you... can you handle it?"
After two decades, legendary collaborators Spike Lee and Denzel Washington reunite for their fifth cinematic joint: Highest 2 Lowest, a modern-day reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s revered 1963 crime thriller High and Low (Heaven and Hell). Produced by A24 and co-produced by Apple Original Films, the new project is set to make its world premiere out-of-competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival before hitting U.S. theaters on August 22, 2025, with a streaming debut on Apple TV+ on September 5.
A Modern Take on a Classic
Filmed in the streets of New York City in 2024, Highest 2 Lowest transposes Kurosawa’s tense kidnapping drama from post-war Japan to the ruthless landscape of today’s music industry. Denzel Washington stars as a powerful, widely respected music mogul known for having “the best ears in the business.” When he becomes the target of a calculated ransom plot, he’s thrown into a high-stakes moral dilemma that blurs the lines between right and wrong, business and humanity, survival and justice.
All-Star Cast and Teaser Buzz
The ensemble cast is stacked: Westworld’s Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera (Godfather of Harlem), rapper A$AP Rocky, breakout star Ice Spice, Dean Winters (Oz, 30 Rock), and John Douglas Thompson (Till, The Gilded Age) round out the roster. The teaser trailer offers only glimpses—moody nighttime shots, fast cuts, and Spike Lee’s signature visual flair—but it’s enough to spark serious anticipation.
From Script to Screen
The film is written by Alan Fox and inspired not only by Kurosawa’s screenplay but by the source novel King’s Ransom by Evan Hunter. It's produced by Jason Michael Berman (Air, Nine Days) and Todd Black (Fences, Emancipation), bringing heavyweight talent behind the scenes as well.
A 2025 Must-Watch
For cinephiles and newcomers alike, Highest 2 Lowest promises a gripping, socially-charged thriller packed with Lee’s usual moral complexity and cinematic style—punctuated by the powerhouse performance of Denzel Washington. With the cultural pulse of New York City, a killer soundtrack on the horizon, and a timely reimagining of one of cinema’s greats, this joint is already looking like one of 2025’s most talked-about films.
