Film will be helmed by director Alex Parkinson
Focus Features has acquired the U.S. distribution rights and select international territories for the highly anticipated thriller Last Breath. The film, helmed by director Alex Parkinson, stars Woody Harrelson, Finn Cole, and Simu Liu in a harrowing tale inspired by true events. Universal Pictures International will manage distribution in key territories, including France, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, and major Asian markets such as China, South Korea, and Vietnam.
A Gripping Tale of Survival
Last Breath draws its narrative from the acclaimed 2019 documentary co-directed by Parkinson and Richard da Costa. The film follows a seasoned deep-sea diver as he undertakes a perilous rescue mission, battling the unforgiving forces of nature. Marketed as a “heart-pounding” and “gripping tale of teamwork,” the movie promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. The screenplay is co-written by Mitchell LaFortune, Alex Parkinson, and David Brooks, adding depth to this fact-based thriller.
A Collaborative Production
The project is a collaboration between Longshot Films, Dark Castle Entertainment, and Aperture, with Paul and David Brooks spearheading development and co-financing efforts. Additional producers include Stewart Le Maréchal, Al Morrow, Anna Mohr-Pietsch, Jeremy Plager, Hal Sadoff, and Norman Golightly. The sale was facilitated domestically by CAA Media Finance, with FilmNation Entertainment handling international sales.
Cannes Buzz
Last Breath has already generated significant buzz at the Cannes Film Festival, where Paul Brooks presented the project to select buyers. This marks yet another successful partnership between Brooks and Focus Features, following previous collaborations on My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 and Champions, both of which featured Woody Harrelson.
Focus Features' Expanding Slate
This acquisition bolsters Focus Features' already impressive lineup of upcoming films. Notable titles include Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders, Morgan Neville’s Piece by Piece (exploring Pharrell Williams’ life through Lego art), Robert Eggers’ reimagining of Nosferatu, Edward Berger’s thriller Conclave, and the Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black from director Sam Taylor-Johnson.
A Promising Thriller
With its gripping storyline, stellar cast, and proven production team, Last Breath is poised to become a standout in the thriller genre. The film not only underscores Focus Features' commitment to high-quality storytelling but also reinforces its track record of delivering cinematic hits to audiences worldwide.
