The Campy Summer Movie We Didn't Know We Needed
Okay, let's talk about this movie.
Stop! That! Train! is unapologetically queer, ridiculously unhinged, and basically a love letter to Airplane! and the disaster films of the '70s and '80s. And honestly? We were not prepared for how much fun it actually is.
So what's it about?
Best friends Tess (Ginger Minj) and DeeDee (Jujubee) are train stewardesses who ditch their miserable shifts on the Stank Rail for the glamorous Glamazonian Express. But when a catastrophic "Stormaganza" threatens to crash the high-speed train straight into Los Angeles, they have to team up with the snobbiest first-class crew imaginable and President Gagwell herself (RuPaul) to save the day.
What actually works
RuPaul as the President is everything. Like, the casting alone deserves an award. The writers throw so many jokes at the wall that more stick than you'd expect, and Shankman's energy is so infectious that even when a gag doesn't land, you're still having a great time. Ginger Minj and Jujubee are genuinely funny together, and the cameos Sarah Michelle Gellar, Rachel Bloom, Nicole Richie, Lisa Rinna, Matt Rogers keep coming in waves. Every time you think it can't get more chaotic, it does
Bottom line
This movie is not trying to be deep. It's trying to be the most fun you have in a theater this summer and it pulls it off. If you grew up watching Drag Race and have been waiting for that world to hit the big screen properly, this is your moment. Camp is cinema. Full stop.
