Brings Gotham’s Criminal Underworld to Life in New Midseason Trailer

New York, NY — Fans at New York Comic Con (NYCC) were in for a treat as HBO unveiled a thrilling midseason trailer for The Penguin, the latest addition to the darkly cinematic world of The Batman. Starring Colin Farrell in a transformative role as Oswald "Oz" Cobb (better known as The Penguin), the series continues director Matt Reeves’ gritty take on Gotham City’s underworld, originally introduced in Warner Bros.’ 2022 blockbuster The Batman. The Penguin debuts Sundays on HBO and streams on Max.

Building on The Batman Universe

Developed by showrunner Lauren LeFranc, The Penguin centers around Oz Cobb, Gotham's ambitious mob boss whose rise to power is filled with alliances, betrayals, and bloody confrontations. Farrell’s portrayal of Cobb brings a raw edge to the character, offering an in-depth look into the criminal mind and showcasing the vicious and power-hungry personality that has captivated DC fans for decades. Matt Reeves’ vision for The Batman universe is deeply embedded in this series, allowing audiences to delve even further into Gotham’s murky underworld.

A Stellar Ensemble Cast

The series doesn’t just boast Farrell’s acclaimed performance but is supported by an outstanding ensemble cast. Cristin Milioti (Palm Springs) plays Sofia Falcone, an iconic name in Gotham’s mob hierarchy and a direct challenger to Cobb’s ascent. Rhenzy Feliz (Runaways) joins as Victor Aguilar, adding a fresh perspective to Gotham’s criminal circles. Michael Kelly (House of Cards) portrays Johnny Viti, a character with long-standing ties to Gotham’s criminal families, and Shohreh Aghdashloo (The Expanse) shines as Nadia Maroni, bringing an imposing matriarchal presence to the series.

Additional cast members include Deirdre O’Connell as Francis Cobb, Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, James Madio as Milos Grapa, Scott Cohen as Luca Falcone, Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone, Carmen Ejogo as Eve Karlo, and Theo Rossi as Dr. Julian Rush, each playing pivotal roles that deepen the story’s exploration of loyalty, family, and the brutal struggles for control over Gotham.

Behind the Scenes Talent

The production powerhouse backing The Penguin is equally impressive. The series is executive produced by Matt Reeves, who helmed The Batman and whose vision continues to shape this expanded Gotham universe. Dylan Clark and Colin Farrell also serve as executive producers, with showrunner Lauren LeFranc leading the writing team and Craig Zobel directing the first three episodes. Additionally, Bill Carraro and Daniel Pipski contribute as executive producers, under the banner of Reeves’ 6th & Idaho Productions, in partnership with Dylan Clark Productions, Warner Bros. Television, and DC Studios.

An Evolution of Gotham’s Saga

Building on the success of The Batman, The Penguin is a study in character complexity, weaving themes of power, loyalty, and ambition into a story that goes beyond traditional superhero narratives. The trailer showcased at NYCC hints at a visceral journey through Gotham's criminal network, focusing on the gritty, morally ambiguous character of Oz Cobb. As he maneuvers through Gotham’s cutthroat underworld, audiences are promised a raw portrayal of the cost of ambition in a city plagued by crime.

The Penguin: A Must-Watch Event for DC Fans

The Penguin promises to deliver a mix of suspense, intrigue, and high-stakes drama, embodying the dark aesthetic and thematic depth that Matt Reeves introduced in The Batman. With an impressive cast, top-notch production team, and a storyline that dives deeper into Gotham’s criminal psyche, The Penguin is set to be a must-watch for DC fans and newcomers alike.
